Weird Laws: New York Edition

Weird & Funny Laws
Being in Texas, I felt odd picking on my home state for its weird laws. So I turned my attention to what I believe to be amongst the dumbest folks I've encountered in my travels: Florida. But their weird laws didn't make me laugh half as much as those in New York. Seeing as to how I know many folks up in New York, I thought it would only be fair.

Without further ado, here are the weird laws I came across in the State of New York:

  • Women may go topless in public, providing it is not being used as a business.
  • It is illegal for a woman to be on the street wearing “body hugging clothing”. But it's alright if you were topless?
  • Citizens may not greet each other by “putting one’s thumb to the nose and wiggling the fingers”. On this one, I simply had to act this one out.
  • A fine of $25 can be levied for flirting. Why isn't the State amongst the richest?
  • It is against the law to throw a ball at someone’s head for fun. Oh man this one got me giggling.
  • The penalty for jumping off a building is death. Things that make you go hmmmmm.
  • New Yorkers cannot dissolve a marriage for irreconcilable differences, unless they both agree to it.
  • A person may not walk around on Sundays with an ice cream cone in his/her pocket. I'm getting visuals that I'm certain I should not.
  • While riding in an elevator, one must talk to no one, and fold his hands while looking toward the door.
  • Slippers are not to be worn after 10:00 PM.
I'm taking requests for what state to do next. Let me know in the comments.  ▣

Your Online World After Your Death

Skeletons
Re-published with permission from TechnologyNomad.com

In today's online World thinking about what happens to one's online accounts, which to many is a big chunk of their World, after their death might be morbid. Perhaps even a tad superstitious and pessimistic. Unfortunately, it's a necessary evil.

Now I wanted to write about the topic, but after doing a bit of research (as I always do for an article) revealed that blog site MakeUseOf covered it, and covered it quite well. According to the article, email services like Hotmail and Gmail allow next of kin to access accounts of deceased individuals as long as the family can provide proof of death. My guess is that anonymous accounts, where incomplete or incorrect information is provided, mean that the accounts get locked over time due to lack of usage. Whereas other services, like MySpace, will simply delete the account upon request. The infamous Facebook will also delete an account if asked, but they also go out of their way and turn the user's page into a memorial one, if the family so wishes. I highly recommend reading the MakeUseOf article as it covers quite a bit.

The Bloom Box: Green Energy for the Future

As many of you have noticed, I've taken some unexpected time off. I'm back now and hope that it doesn't happen again. I missed blogging.

Today's inspirational Monday post is about green energy. Yes, it's a buzz phrase that's makes its rounds every now and then; but this is in line with well deserved mention of The Winds of Change.

The Bloom Box: Green Energy for the Future

One of those blocks he's holding can power 4 to 6 Indian homes, one home in the UK or two blocks to power an American home. At least that's the claim being made by K.R. Sridhar, founder of Bloom Energy, on 60 Minutes last night. On 60 Minutes, "K.R." confesses that this was an oxygen-generating project built for a scrapped NASA Mars program. He reversed the process, and now instead of producing oxygen the new contraption, the Bloom Box, takes in Oxygen, mixes it with chemicals, resulting in a fuel-cell, which outputs electricity.

I would love to sit here and sound like I know what I'm talking about when I don't. Instead, I urge you to see the video.

In a day and age where one would think that all things have been invented & discovered, we are still surprised with things like liquid glass, wireless electricity and the Bloom Box.  ▣
